WINDOWS VISTA

It’s been 5 years since Microsoft’s newest version of the Windows operating system.  Finally, coming in mid 2006, Microsoft is releasing its newest version of Windows, Windows Vista.  Previously code named Longhorn, Windows Vista will include many updated, as well as new, features.  Some of the key features include:

Ø        User account protection

o         Different user and administrative privileges

o         Run programs with limited permissions

Ø        Desktop search

o         Integrated search capabilities will help you find just about anything on your computer quickly

o         Type a keyword or any part of a file name in a quick search box to instantly find the file you are searching for

Ø        Organization

o         Easy for you to view and organize your files in any way you want

o         Instantly see all the files that are stored on your computer in ways that make sense to you

Ø        Visualization

o         You will be able to see live previews of programs, documents, photos, and videos. You will see the first page of a document or the details of an image to ensure that it is the file that you are looking for before you open it

Ø        Security

o         Share and distribute information more securely

o         Ability to create unalterable versions of documents and list specific access rights for your readers

o         Apply digital signatures and rights management to ensure the authenticity of your information as it travels to your readers

Ø        Diagnostics

o         Built in diagnostics will help you detect, analyze, and fix problems quickly and easily

Microsoft is also boasting about its start-up/shut-down speed.  They say you will be able to turn your computer on and off like a TV (in a matter of seconds) instead of waiting for Windows to boot-up/shut-down.  Before people go and buy Vista they might want to take a look at their current specs on their computer.  Microsoft is recommending, at the very least, 512MB of memory if not more, and a graphics card that is 64MB, is compatible with DirectX 9 graphics, and has 32 bpp (bits per pixel) so it can support Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM), which is the driver that will allow you to take full advantage of the graphic interface in Vista.  Most graphics cards currently available meet these requirements.  So if you are in the market for a new system and plan to run Windows Vista keep in mind the specs required for your next purchase.  Also remember that IPoint is a Dell Small Business Partner and can save you money on your next system.  If you are interested in upgrading to Windows Vista give IPoint a call.

WEBSITE BLOGS

I’m sure by now we have all come across blogs, or weblogs as they are also known.  Many sites out there today are using these blogs to communicate information to different people.  Any subject you can think of, somewhere on the Internet right now there is someone who has a blog written on the topic.  A blog is an online journal that is used by individuals as well as companies.  They are used by individuals as a mode for free speech, and to give opinions on particular topics or current events.

Companies can use blogs for a more commercial approach.  They can be used to give people in as well as outside the company recent and ongoing information on the company.  While blogs are conveying this information they are also helping the company on the internet.  As stated by Scott Allen of IPoint-Tech, “Blogs offer the dynamic content that search engines seek out in an effort to drive their clients to the most informative sites on the web.”  So in essence weblogs are used by companies to not only communicate information but also as a tool to bring people into their website.  In recent years because ‘blogging” has become so huge, there are many tools available to start blogs.  These tools often require very little computer experience and are very easy to start up.

There are many tools out there to help with your blogs, many of which are free.  If you type “blogs” into a Google search you will end up with about 372,000,000 results.  If you type “blog tools” into a google search you will get around 107,000,000 results.  It’s clear how massive the blogging industry is.  Many of these search results landed me in different blogging sites.  Many of these are free of charge and often are meant for an individuals use.  On the other hand there were some results that brought me to sites for software that could be used for a business.  One of these sites I came across was www.anconia.com.  This software does cost money but is advertised as blogging software designed for a business.  A great article to read would be this PC Magazine article which also has links to other blogging tools.  http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1403731,00.asp.

When it comes to weblogging for a business you might want the custom approach.  This way you could customize the blogs to your company.  This is a simple service to obtain because most database and web developers could apply one to your site.  There are many companies that have already employed blogs into their site.  Below is a list of some companies already taking advantage of weblogs.

·          Microsoft - http://www.microsoft.com/communities/blogs

·          Ford - http://media.ford.com/newsroom/feature_display.cfm?release=17691

·          Google - http://googleblog.blogspot.com/

·          Sony - http://www.sony.com/SonySearch/Search.jsp?mode=&pst=blogs&pti=0&psti=0&st=blog&ti=0

Above are just a few of the many companies out there taking advantage of blogs.  In the sites listed, the companies use blogs to state news and updates on company business and events.  This is a good way to get potential customers/employees of your business involved.  So why not blog?  Give IPoint a call today and ask how blogs can help you.

RICH INTERNET APPLICATIONS

The term "Rich Internet Application" was first introduced by Macromedia in March of 2002. The basic concept has been around for years but has had different names such as X Internet and Rich Clients. Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) are a cross between web applications and traditional desktop applications.  They transfer some of the processing to the client side, which means that the client gets involved in the process rather than looking at a static webpage.

Because RIAs take advantage of the users's computer, they offer real-time user-interface options that are not possible with the standard HTML that is available to browser-based Web applications. This means that the user of the RIA site can, in real-time, view changes made or taking place.  We often veiws sites that include these applications but just don't know it.  Some website examples are below, as well as descriptions of how they utilize RIAs.

·          https://us.etrade.com/e/t/home

o         E-Trade takes advantage of RIAs when showing the user the real-time stock ticker.  It not only lets you see the market as a whole, but you can enter a stock symbol and the stock window will change to that stock.  Notice when you do this the whole screen does not need to reload, only that stock window does.  This is Etrade taking advantage of RIAs.

·          http://progressive.com/

o         Progressive, as we have all heard, is an online car insurance company.  They take advantage of RIAs in their rate ticker.  This is a feature that allows you to see what other companies are quoting for insurance on your same car. Progressive also uses this to set them apart for their competition.

·          http://coloradocustom.com/

o         Colorado Custom is a company that makes custom wheels and uses RIAs to make the easy of viewing their products easier.

We must also look at the performance benefits. The computing resources of both the client and the server are more balanced with RIAs.  Traditionally when you visit a site all the information and pictures you see are pulled off of a server where that site is stored.  This meathod creates a problem because all interaction and information has to pass through the server.  This means that data has to be sent to the server, the server must respond, and then the page has to be loaded on the user’s computer with the response.  With RIAs the server only holds some of the information and the user’s computer does the rest of the work which can eliminate this slow process.

So how would this benfit your business?  It all boils down to the experience.  We have all been on some websites that cause us problems.  As a matter of fact 72% of all shopping carts are abandoned before checkout due to frustrations arising during the process.  This is a huge percentage of customers that are lost due to the webpage.  RIAs aim to eliminate this.  The economy has gone through many changes in the past.  We started with commodities, and then moved to goods, then services, and now we look for the experience aspect as well.  RIAs look to create this experience, all in all creating a more enjoyable visit to your website by your potential or current customers.  This is one thing that all the sites above have in common.  They all focus on making the experience easier and more enjoyable for the user of the website.

Visit Ipoint’s website at http://www.ipoint-tech.com/content/newMedia/. At the bottom of the page you will see other links under Examples and Testimonials.  Take a look at a couple examples of RIAs that we have done for our clients and give IPoint a call and ask how Rich Internet Applications can be implimented to help your page.

FUN FACTS:

·          The first official record of the use of the word "bug" in the context of computing is associated with a computer, which was in service at the Naval Weapons Center in Dahlgren, Virginia. On September 9th, 1945, a moth flew into one of the relays and jammed it. The offending moth was taped into the log book alongside the official report, which stated: "First actual case of a bug being found."  Now the term "bug" is universally accepted by computer users as meaning an error or flaw -- either in the machine itself or, perhaps more commonly, in a program (hence the phrase "debugging a program").

TRACKING YOUR ADVERTISING AND MARKETING

How many of your customers came to you through the phone book this year?  How about your website, the leads groups you go to, or your current customers?  If you are not sure, think of the benefit of having all of this information in one simple report.  You would be able to budget what to spend advertising dollars on for the coming year.  You could get an extra special gift for those customers that brought you the most new business.  With IPoint’s new customer management application you can have all of that information and more.  You can track all the information you need about your customers securely over the internet.  You can keep your customers up to date about your company and products through targeted emails and make sure your prospective customers are giving you all the information you need to close the deal.

Information Point Technologies has developed a complete set of online tools that makes it easy for you to track where your customers are coming from.  It uses a customizable form on your web page that people can fill out directly and a secure administration where you can log customers that come from other sources.  The administration also allows you to change what questions are asked and search through the existing contacts.  There are also concise reports that give you hard numbers on where you are getting your customers from.

The administration also offers a listserv component that allows you to search for specific groups of customers to send emails to and can use graphic templates developed specifically for your business.  This is only the beginning of what can be done and IPoint can develop any number of custom tools for your business as well.  Make sure to schedule your free consultation to find out more about how you can start maximizing your advertising dollars and customer retention.
